Apply for a grant

This section is for UHBW staff only, and contains information about how to apply for a grant.

Charity funds are used to create welcoming environments, support staff training and development, invest in innovative research, and provide world-class facilities and the latest technology. Find out more about what we fund.

Please read: Important information on COVID-19

To receive funding from Above & Beyond, your grant application must meet our three main eligibility criteria:

  • The proposed initiative will benefit patient care
  • The funding will go ‘above and beyond’ core NHS provision
  • The award would pass a public perception test of the use of charitable funds.

Training, education and conference requests: interim arrangements

Please note: training, education and conference funding requests are currently undergoing review by Divisional Directors before being signed off for charity funding. This applies to all costs including those for which you might previously have been able to submit a reimbursement of expenses form for under £250.

Before paying out for any training (including study and away days), educational courses or conferences under £250, we would advise that you submit a Request for Funding to [email protected] which will be passed on for divisional consideration. Please ensure that you submit your Request for Funding Form at least 4 weeks before the event in order for us to be able to process your request.

During this interim arrangement, the only requests considered will be for local or online events. This will be reviewed later in the year.

Download the Request for Funding Form for training, education and conference requests under £250 below:

Request for Funding Form

How to apply for a grant

For grants worth less than £250

Please submit a reimbursement of expenses form. This needs to be signed by a fund advisor with receipts and invoices attached. Reimbursement will then be issued to the named bank account via BACS transfer.

Reimbursement of Expenses Form

For grants worth over £250

Please complete a grant application form for approval. This needs to be signed by a fund advisor and include evidence of costs. Once approved, you will be given a Grant Application number which needs to be included on any reimbursement of expenses claims or invoices.

For grants worth over £5,000

In addition to approval from a fund advisor, these grants also require sign off from the Divisional Director and approval from CPSG. For queries regarding the CPSG approval process, please contact Kirsty Cepek, UHB Head of Capital Accounting.

For grants worth over £10,000

In addition to approval from a fund advisor, Divisional Director and CPSG, these grants also require approval from our Board of Trustees who meet six times a year. These grants can therefore take significantly longer to process.

Research grants

Research funds are administered via the UH Bristol Research Capability Funding Committee, so please make your research grant application via their website here.

Please note, we aim to review all grant applications and reimbursement claims within two weeks. However, the approval process may take longer at busier times of year and depends on the grant value.

For full information on our Grants Application process, please download our Fund Advisors' Handbook below. If you have any questions, please contact us on the details below.
