Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre
The Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) is a specialist non-surgical treatment centre for people with cancer, and for people who do not have cancer but require specialist radiotherapy or haematology services.
As well as being the cancer treatment centre for Avon and Somerset, the hospital provides specialist services to people from across the South West and beyond. They are also part of the Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire Cancer Network and the only Comprehensive Care Centre for Haemophilia in the South West. The hospital also provides chemotherapy in the community, an initiative supported by Above & Beyond.
In 2009 the Above & Beyond CaRE Appeal helped to transform the 40 year old hospital to create a modern warm and welcoming care environment.
"We set out to raise the funds needed to radically re-design and reburbish many areas in the hospital to create a modern, caring environment for the 1,000 patients, visitors and staff who walk through its' doors every day" explains Chief Executive at Above & Beyond Sarah Talbot-Williams. She adds:
"What united all of us in this major fundraising challenge was our determination to make sure that the hospital surroundings offered a caring environment which did justice to the care provided by dedicated healthcare staff."
The CaRE Appeal meant that the main reception area of the hospital was transformed, and services brought together to offer patients and visitors a sense of holistic care as they enter the building. Dedicated space for supportive services - including nurse specialists, counselling services and specialist psychological treatments was also created in both reception and outpatient areas.
In addition the appeal funded the expansion of the outpatients department, with new clinic and consulting rooms created, offering patients more privacy and dignity. Existing clinic rooms were completely re-furbished. The waiting area was completely re-designed, with natural light introduced.
The final element of the CaRE Appeal's transformation of the hospital was an integrated arts programme of artworks, lighting and way-finding signs to link patients, visitors and staff with local well-loved scenes and to make the hospital more welcoming.
