What we do Our hospitals Bristol Eye Hospital Bristol Eye Hospital (BEH) is one of the UK’s leading ophthalmology centres and is highly respected as a pioneer in research, education and clinical practice. The University of Bristol Department of Ophthalmology is attached to the hospital and leads its field in research into eye disease and the development of new treatments, including glaucoma, day case cataract surgery and many other fields. Did you know? Each year, over 130,000 patients are treated for at the BEH. It costs £789 per day to care for an in-patient in the BEH. The hospital has 24 ophthalmic consultants supported by a wide range of staff including orthoptists, optometrists, pharmacists and nurse practitioners. BEH houses one of only two corneal transplant banks in England. Nearly 8,000 operations take place every year. What we have funded Thanks to the generosity of those making a gift in their will, Above & Beyond was able to make a contribution of £500,000 to a £1.9 million redevelopment of the Eye Hospital. A new dedicated Children’s Unit was created for the hospital which includes a waiting area with toys and soft play, a children’s optometry room, four extra consulting rooms and a genetic eye clinic large enough for families to be seen together. It also meant a new Retinal Treatment and Research Unit was made possible bringing research and treatment more closely together allowing the team to see many more patients on clinical trials.
