James Fox

James Fox is an Above & Beyond trustee.

James Fox

James has been a stockbroker and investment manager in Bristol for over 30 years, latterly as head of Rathbones' local office which he was responsible for opening in 1994. In his professional life, he has advised a number of leading local charities in the South West and South Wales and now enjoys sitting on "the other side of the table" as Trustee of three charities including Above & Beyond. His hobbies include watching all sports and participating in some (golf, running, swimming, taekwondo), and acting as treasurer of Bristol's very active triathlon club, BAD Tri.

James is a member of the Audit Committee and is lead trustee for the charity’s investment policy with oversight of our retained investment advisors. He holds the FT NED Diploma, the recognised qualification for non-executive directors.

Lee Aston

Lee Aston is an Above & Beyond trustee.

Lee Aston

Lee is born and bred Bristolian, and is very proud of his home city. Lee trained as an accountant with a small Bristol firm, before spending eight years with a global accounting firm, working in the UK and Frankfurt as part of the European leadership team. He is a former Director of Finance at Thrings Solicitors and is now working as a freelance Finance Director for local businesses. Lee is a Fellow and an elected member of Council at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), and is a Past President of the ICAEW West of England.

Lee believes that in addition to his statutory duties as a Trustee, his obligation is to ensure that money raised through blood, sweat and tears, leads to something meaningful for patients, fundraisers and donors alike.

Lee joined as a Trustee in May 2017 and is a member of the Audit Committee. He also supports the senior management team with regard to financial and accounting matters.

Steve Bluff

Steve Bluff is an Above & Beyond trustee.

Steve BluffSteve has enjoyed spending much of his career in retail and consumer goods in various senior leadership roles both in the UK and across Europe. He has now set up his own coaching and consulting company helping start ups and more established businesses fully develop their operation and leadership teams. As a father of three boys, Steve is passionate about helping Bristol thrive and to maintain its status as the best city in the UK to live and work, including the delivery of outstanding health care. 

Steve joined as a Trustee in May 2017.

Peter Scott

Pete Scott is an Above & Beyond trustee.

Peter Scott

Peter is a retired property lawyer and was for many years a partner in Bevan Brittan, a firm specialising in all sectors of NHS law. Peter has always been interested in how public, private and the third sectors can cooperate to improve services, whether in terms of health or housing, so being a trustee of Above & Beyond gives scope to develop those interests. He now combines his interest in golf and grandchildren with an active role in a small number of local charities.

Peter joined as a Trustee in July 2013 and was appointed Vice Chair effective from May 2019. He also provides advice and guidance to the charity’s senior management team on property matters.

Jane Dean

Jane Dean is an Above & Beyond trustee.

Jane DeanJane is the principal of Jane Dean & Associates, a catering and hospitality consultancy. She has 30 years of experience in the corporate, heritage, cultural and commercial sector both public and private. She is involved with two charitable organisations advising on strategy, commercial and operational activities including major projects. 

Jane joined as a Trustee in September 2015 and is Chair of the Audit Committee.

Chris Monk

Chris Monk

Chris became a Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetist and Intensivist at Bristol Royal Infirmary in 1989, where he worked until 2015. He was involved with NHS strategy, planning, redevelopment and changes of services, as Clinical Director and Chair of Anaesthesia, the Associate Medical Director and Head of Division for Medicine. As a clinician Chris’s focus was on putting the patient first and he was committed to improving the quality of their experience in every way he could. As a trustee at Above & Beyond he continues in this commitment to make patient experience the very best it can be.

Chris joined as a trustee in July 2016 and became Chair of Trustees in May 2019. He is the nominated trustee within the charity’s Freedom to Speak Up policy.

Dr William Oldfield

Dr William Oldfield is an Above & Beyond trustee.

After undergraduate training in Pharmacology and subsequently Human and Applied Physiology, Dr William Oldfield trained in Medicine at St. George's Hospital Medical School. After general professional training he entered the North West Thames training programme in Respiratory Medicine. During this time he completed a PhD at the National Heart and Lung Institute before being appointed as Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to the Royal Brompton and St. Mary’s Hospitals, London in 2003. He subsequently held a number of clinical management positions at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust before joining University Hospitals Bristol in 2018.

Steve Campling

Steve Campling is an Above & Beyond trustee.

Stephen migrated to Bristol from Norfolk, via Luxembourg and Cambridge, some 30 years ago. He is a Programme Manager and Operations Director with 40 years experience working in the IT sector and with a wide variety of customers both in the UK and overseas. Many of his roles have been associated with the introduction of cultural and organisational change. His most recent appointments have been with Lloyds Banking group and the DVLA leading their IT support and development functions. Stephen is also a trustee for a Somerset based charity supporting people with learning difficulties. His hobbies include golf, scuba diving and travelling. Steve joined as a Trustee in June 2019.

Jane Palmer

Jane Palmer is an Above & Beyond trustee.

Jane has worked in the heath service as a nurse for over 40 years with nearly all her career at Bristol Royal Infirmary. Retiring in December 2017, her last full time job was as Head of Nursing for Surgery at UH Bristol and latterly as Head of Nursing for the Chief Nurse team. With a focus on patient experience throughout her long career, one of Jane’s proudest achievements was her involvement with transferring surgical wards and ITU in the state of the art Terrell Street building at the BRI in 2014. Jane is a proud Bristolian with two grown-up sons and a golf and rugby-mad husband. She enjoys outdoor activities including Nordic walking, gardening and keeping fit.

Jane joined as a trustee in June 2019 and oversees the charity’s Safeguarding Policy.
