Love your heart. Love your hospital. Love your NHS.

The Bristol Heart Institute (BHI) has some of the best staff from around the world, who use the latest techniques, research and treatments. The hospital is the leading centre for minimally invasive keyhole surgery, performing 500 procedures a month.

Keyhole surgery is particularly important for patients considered too high-risk for open heart surgery. Patients spend much less time in hospital, recover faster, have fewer post-surgery complications and can return home more quickly.

To stay at the forefront of keyhole surgery, the BHI needs the most up-to-date scanning equipment and hi-tech echocardiography service and facilities. This state of the art technology is used to scan the heart and guide keyhole surgery which needs absolute precision, enabling consultants to implant new heart valves, treat heart arrhythmia and provide mechanical life support in intensive care.

The BHI performs 17,000 scans a year but this isn’t enough. Staff need to perform nearly double this number and with your help, we can create a new echocardiography facility to achieve this goal.

Jenny Anstey, Matron, says:

People from across the South West directly benefit from having specialist cardiac services on their doorstep and your help with the Bristol Heart Institute Appeal will enable us to push the boundaries of innovation even further for future provision of care.

How you can help

With your support, we can ensure the BHI continues to provide the very best care and treatment for some of the UK’s sickest patients. As part of the Appeal, we’re fundraising for:

iPads - £14,688

To aid recovery of patients and help them keep in touch with family and friends.

CorKnot devices - £30,000

To assist surgeons carrying out intricate keyhole procedures such as heart valve surgery.

Heart valve devices - £84,000

To provide mechanical support for high risk patients who have suffered heart failure and other serious heart condition.

A new echo machine - £106,800

To provide the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit with ultrasound equipment for urgent bedside diagnosis.

Echocardiography facility - £378,000

To relocate all echocardiography services under one roof. Currently these are split between Bristol Royal Infirmary and Bristol Heart Institute meaning some of our sickest patients have to be moved around the hospital.
