Art Works

There are seven artworks being created for the Bristol Heart Centre. They range from a suspended sculpture in the atrium and an entrance lighting commission to wall works in the visitor and patient lift lobbies. Six of the artwork commissions are underway, with seven artists appointed to work on them. These artists come from both Bristol and beyond.

All the artworks will be designed and developed in consultation with staff and patient groups. You also might like to see more information about the artists..

The Artwork Commissions

Main Entrance Lighting - Jo Fairfax
This commission highlights the approach and main entrance façade of the new Heart Centre, guiding and welcoming people as they arrive. Jo's design will light the building at night and provide surface interest on the façade by day. Jo is working with Bristol-based GDS Lighting Solutions to fabricate and install this artwork.

Queens's courtyard: Walter Jack
The only outside space visible from within the centre, this provides an opportunity to create impact and allow people a view of a natural environment from the atrium. Walter will work with the landscape architects, Fira, to add interest to the view into the space.

Atrium mobile: Jan Blake and Rob Olins
This is a suspended sculpture using the full 4 storey height of the atrium void, hanging from the ceiling alongside the main stairs to be seen from every level, including the ground floor. The aim is to create a focal point and act as a significant orientation feature.

Outpatients Department (OPD) reception desk: Sophie Nielsen and Rolf Knudsen (ROSO)
This commission is to enhance the reception desk, to welcome people as they arrive in the OPD and act as a focal and orientation point.

Visitor lift lobby wall works: Linda Schwab
These 2 dimensional wall work commissions will be seen by patients, visitors and staff as they arrive out of the lifts on levels 6, 7 and 8. They will act as landmarks and orientation features as well as adding colour and interest to these areas.

Patient lift works / porters project: Marion Brandis
Artworks integrated into the ceilings of the bed lifts will enhance the journey for patients being moved from wards to treatment areas and vice versa. Marion will be collaborating with the porters on this commission. These artworks aim to reassure, calm and distract.

North Face Mural: artist to be appointed
This commission will involve an artist working with local community groups to develop an artwork to run across the north face of the building. The aim is to deter graffiti and could involve a graffiti artist. » Read more
